Alfred Taban, Editor-in-chief of Juba Monitor  was arrested on Saturday for criticizing the government over the violence and carelessness that took the lives of 272 people and injured more than 1000. He was arrested  because of the two articles of 15th and 16th July in his column. Taban wrote a column on Friday in which he criticized Salva Kiir and Riek Machar for not being responsible for controlling their troops and for failing to announce a ceasefire in Juba  over  last week.

on 7th July fighting occurred between the followers of Kiir and Machar, a former rebel leader who became vice president under a deal to end a two-year civil war.

The violence resulted in attacks on UN compounds, which killed and wounded Chinese and Rwandan peacekeepers, the UN Council has condemned the act and has demanded that civilian sites be protected and warned that attacks against civilians and UN premises and personnel may constitute war crimes.

Journalist rights groups Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists, as well as Amnesty International, have called for Taban’s release.
