The first Indian School on Internet Governance (inSIG) has started  at IIIT Hyderabad,  from 31 October 2016  to 2 Nov 2016.  The event is a collaborating event within the  ICANN’s 57th meeting, which is also scheduled at Hyderabad from 3rd Nov 2016 to 9th Nov 2016.

According to the organizers, ” The principal objective of inSIG is to train professionals in the domain of Internet Governance, equipping them with the skills to enable them to participate effectively in global Internet Governance processes and institutions. inSIG is planned as an annual school that would be held in different parts of India each year.”

inSIG will collaborate with other ALLSIG initiatives around the world, sharing experiences, processes and training material creating a broader platform of  best practices and knowledge sharing.

Satish Babu, founder chairman, ISOC, Trivandrum, said “For a country like India with a population of over 1.3 billion and a fast growing community of Internet users, it is important that stakeholder communities be strengthened to participate in global Internet governance in the new regime,” says .

“inSIG2016 seeks to create an empowered community that can project the voices of India’s multiple stakeholders, in particular its 462 million Internet users,” added Mr. Babu

The primary objective of the session, he explained, was to equip civil society organisations in India and the region with the skills needed to participate in Internet governance processes and institutions such as ICANN, the ISOC and Internet Governance Forum.

The 25 representatives from India who complete the training will form a nucleus group that will later impart training to grassroots- level Internet users across the country including students.

The inSIG 2016 is organized in collaboration of   internet society Trivandrum and Delhi chapters ICANN and the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).
