KATHMANDU, NEPAL: The German government has announced an assistance package worth approximately €8 million to support relief, recovery, and long-term rehabilitation efforts in Nepal following the devastating Bhotekoshi floods.

According to a press statement released by the German Embassy in Kathmandu on Thursday, the comprehensive funding package merges immediate humanitarian aid with strategic development cooperation to help displaced families and restore critical infrastructure.

Breakdown of the Aid Package

  • Immediate Emergency Relief (€500,000+): Dispatched via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism following an official request from the Nepali government. The shipment includes essential supplies such as family kitchen sets, heavy-duty tarpaulins, mosquito nets, water purification equipment, and camp beds.
  • Direct Humanitarian Assistance (€200,000): Allocated to local civil society organizations. The funds will focus on:
    • Providing specialized care and health support for pregnant women, new mothers, and newborns.
    • Restoring livelihood opportunities, repairing small-scale local infrastructure, and improving living conditions inside displacement camps.
  • Development & Infrastructure Recovery (€7.35 Million): Implemented through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). This primary chunk of funding will go toward repairing essential health facilities, restoring disrupted water networks, and rebuilding energy access, alongside helping Nepal plan climate-resilient infrastructure for future disasters.

Germany’s pledge comes alongside additional international commitments, including $2.5 million mobilized by the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) and €2.5 million pledged by the European Union.

Expressing deep condolences to the affected families, the German Embassy reaffirmed its commitment: “Germany stands with the people of Nepal in this difficult time.”
